SAMPE Europes 29th International Conference and Forums (SEICO 08) will take place again this year at the Hotel Mercure Conference Center. Composites Forever: Affordable, Durable, Sustainable and Creatable is the theme. The conference will feature 100 papers presented in 33 sessions.
SEICO 08 will explore green themes, beginning J.-M. Berthiers keynote speech entitled, Novel Green Technologies for Helicopters, a New Challenge for the Next Decade.
Presenters on the first day will cover in-situ thermoplastic structures for aerostructures, glass and basalt fiber in high-pressure applications, blast-resistant structures, design of aircraft floor sandwich panels, vacuum forming for aero parts and carbon fiber performing.
Day two topics include fatigue testing of carbon fiber thermoplastics, acoustography, ultrasonic NDT, impact protection for fuselages and composite patches for metallic structures.
On day three, a number of green options will be explored in papers on design/manufacturing strategies that minimize scrap (reducing disposal issues), the reuse of recycled carbon fiber in thermoplastic composites and a paper detailing a silk fibers performance in a thermoplastic composite subjected to low-velocity impact. Additional papers will emphasize design and engineering issues, and significant emphasis this year also will be placed on technologies that monitor the health of composite structures, particularly smart systems. Sessions each day will update attendees on progress made in the development of high-performance nanocomposites and nanoenhancements for conventional systems.
As in the past, SEICO 08 attendees will have free access to the JEC COMPOSITES Show floor; the offset dates for the two events permit SEICO attendees to spend a full day at the JEC show after SEICO ends. SEICO will provide a shuttle bus to the JEC on April 1 and 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
JEC COMPOSITES 2008
When the 2008 JEC COMPOSITES Show opens April 1 for its traditional three-day run at the Paris Expo, in Porte de Versailles, Paris, France. Show organizers, the JEC Group (Paris), expect 1,000 exhibitors again this year. Seventy percent of exhibitors will come from outside France, JEC predicts, adding that more than 25,000 people (exhibitors and visitors) gathered at the Paris Expo during last years evvent 65 percent of them representing 95 countries outside France.

Composite Design and Manufacturing will be the show theme as JEC spotlights developments in R&D, analysis, engineering, design, CAD/CAM, simulation, prototyping, stereolithography, moldmaking, testing, nondestructive testing, process industrialization and nanocomposites. JECs User Forums will be one avenue for exploration of these themes. The Forums will gather composites experts from six applications sectors: Marine, Aeronautics, Land Transport, Automotive, Construction and Natural Fibers. Emphases, particularly in the latter, will include the environment, recycling and biocomposites. Noting that European end-of-life (EOL) vehicle directives stipulate that 95 percent of each vehicle must be recyclable by 2015, compared to the 85 percent requirement that went into effect in 2006, JEC officials anticipate that this years event will see a greater number of green exhibitors suppliers of renewable plant-polymer resin systems and reinforcements derived from plant fibers.
JEC Innovation Awards
In its 11th year, the JEC Innovation Awards program again will honor technical achievements in the composites industry. Some of the winners this year include Hawker de Havilland Aerospace Pty. Ltd. for wing control surfaces on the The Boeing Co.s 787 Dreamliner, Esoro and Weber Fibertech for the Smart tailgate assembly, Ayres Composites Panels for development of fire insulation panels, and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Dortmund for development of an electrically heated carbon fiber mold. The awards ceremony will be held April 1 at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
