Spectrophotometer

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (Columbia, Md.) has developed the UV-1800, the company’s latest UV-VIS (ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy) spectrophotometer. The device features a wavelength resolution of 1 nm and can function as a standalone instrument or can be PC-controlled with USB memory. UVProbe data processing software comes standard with the spectrophotometer so that users can drag and drop data from an optional USB memory stick onto a PC. The USB interface offers macros and graph functions, which are available with commercial spreadsheet software. The USB memory saves spectral data, quantitation values and measurement parameters. The system’s memory also saves parameter settings, making it possible for multiple users to share a single instrument. The system employs the manufacturer’s LO-RAY-LIGHT low stray light diffraction grating to restrict stray light to half that of the company’s UV-1700 model. Additionally, the instrument’s brighter optical system reduces the noise level (at 700 nm) to 25 percent of the previous model. Multiple modes are offered, including photometric, spectrum, quantitation, kinetics, time-scan, multicomponent quantitation and biomethod.
