Registration is now open for “Space to Sea: Composites Are Changing the Way We Make Parts,” a free, two-day workshop on April 12-13, 2022 presented by Composites One (Schaumburg, Ill., U.S.) and the Closed Mold Alliance, in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI, Knoxville, Tenn., U.S.), with support from Magnum Venus Products (MVP, Knoxville). Hosted by Eastern Florida State College (EFSC) in Cocoa, Florida, the event will feature process demos, interactive presentations, Q&A sessions, networking opportunities and more for the composites community.

“After a two-year break due to the pandemic, we’re very excited to bring back our popular series of live, in-person educational events,” says Marcy Offner, director of marketing communications, Composites One. “We’re also proud to host the event at EFSC on Florida’s ‘Space Coast,’ where some of the most exciting developments in the aerospace and marine markets are now taking place.”

At the event, attendees can learn about efforts to prepare the next generation of composites professionals through the Space Coast Consortium Apprenticeship Program, sponsored by Florida-based SpaceTEC Partners Inc. in partnership with EFSC.

Welcoming attendees will be two keynote addresses featuring Scott Lewit, president of Structural Composites Inc. (Melbourne, Fla., U.S.), a composites research and engineering firm recognized with an ACE Award at CAMX 2021, and Dave Nesbitt from Matrix Composites (Rockledge, Fla., U.S.), specialists in composite fabrication using resin transfer molding (RTM) processes, infusion processes and trapped rubber molding for various applications in space and optics.

Other sessions include:

  • Live demos of vacuum infusion, silicone bag molding and thermoplastics processing
  • Real-world composites parts built for aerospace, marine, wind energy and other markets
  • Sessions about the efficiencies of infusion using Aerovac process materials and kitting services
  • Networking opportunities and more

Leading the sessions will be process experts from Composites One and the Closed Mold Alliance, IACMI and MVP. The Closed Mold Alliance is a resource dedicated to helping manufacturers make a successful conversion to closed mold and other advanced processes.

“‘Space to Sea: Composites Are Changing the Way We Make Parts,’ would not be possible without the expertise and support of EFSC and the Space Coast Consortium, along with our supplier partners,” adds Offner. Among those suppliers are Aerovac, as well as A&P Technology (Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.), Polynt (Carpentersville, Ill., U.S.), Structural Composites and Vectorply (Phenix City, Ala., U.S.).

This is the first of three workshops in Advanced Composites processes and materials being presented this year by Composites One, IACMI and its other partners. For details about future events, visit compositesone.com.

Space is limited; Composites One recommends interested parties register as soon as possible at iacmi.org/from-space-to-sea.
