According to an announcement made by The Graphene Council (New Bern, N.C., U.S.), GIM GrapheneFibre (Saudi Arabia) has begun commercial production of graphene-enriched, high-performance carbon fiber. The facility is reported to leverage graphene’s properties — optimal strength, conductivity and lightness — for the production of composite materials that are applicable in industries such as aerospace, automotive, renewable energy, defense, space and construction.

GIM GrapheneFibre, launched by Graphene Innovations Manchester (GIM, U.K.) and Saudi-based Organized Chaos (Dammam), embodies Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 for innovation and advanced material solutions. GIM has applied graphene across various sectors, integrating robotics, artificial intelligence (AI) and extensive expertise in 2D materials.

“GIM is committed to having a transformative impact on the materials people use worldwide, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global technological leadership,” says Dr. Vivek Koncherry, CEO and chairman of GIM GrapheneFibre and GIM. “We are honored to bring our advanced technologies to the Kingdom, providing high-quality, graphene-enhanced carbon fiber to our customers within KSA and beyond.”

Called the Industry 4.0 Gigafactory, GIM GrapheneFibre says its production facility will use local raw materials and renewable energy sources to manufacture graphene-enhanced carbon fiber at scale, offering high-performance and sustainable solutions. Production commenced in November 2024, with the first machine now operational in Saudi Arabia. A large-scale manufacturing factory is set to be established in Saudi Arabia by 2025, contributing to more than 4,500 jobs and generating revenues exceeding $1.6 billion.
