The SAMPE Foundation (Diamond Bar, Calif., U.S.), which is affiliated with the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) is seeking nominations from North American high school STEM programs interested in obtaining “Composites: Lighter, Stronger, Faster, An Explanation of What Composites Are, How They Work, and Why They Are Important” by Brent Strong. Ideally, the source of these nominations should come from the combined efforts of SAMPE Professional Chapters working with one or more of their affiliate student chapters. Details of the nomination process, along with guidelines for executing such a program, can be found on the Foundation’s website.
The textbook and the associated videos are designed to facilitate high school instruction of the basics of composite materials. While the textbook and access to the videos are free of charge and are already widely available (more than 1,000 copies have been distributed already), the primary goal of the SAMPE Foundation’s new program is to embed a composite materials program in high school STEM programs. The Foundation’s long-range objective is to inspire students to pursue further studies in this field and to eventually join the advanced material workforce.
“Our goal is to award up to three high schools in the coming months,” says Ted Lynch, SAMPE Foundation chair
The SAMPE Foundation Grants Subcommittee will review all nominations, and their recommendations will be presented to the SAMPE Foundation board of directors for final approval. The deadline for nomination submissions is Sept. 1, 2024. Winners will be announced after the Foundation board meeting at CAMX 2024.
