A Guide to Composites Fracture Toughness and Sandwich Construction Testing

September 30, 2021 |

Compared to traditional, structural materials, composites offer designers improved performance and flexibility.

However, these benefits come at the cost of increased material complexity and it is easy to overlook the challenges of producing high-quality test data to support the needs of both design and materials component.

A previous webinar by Ian McEnteggart, "The Challenges of Composites Testing," reviewed the basics of composites laminate testing. This webinar takes an in-depth look at composites fracture toughness and sandwich construction testing.

Fracture toughness describes the resistance of a material to crack propagation from a defect, as it is a very important parameter in many critical structural applications of composites such as aerospace.

Sandwich constructions are extremely efficient and lightweight structures with a high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratio that are used extensively in aerospace and commercial industries. Like composite laminates, characterization of sandwich constructions requires a range of tests under different loading and environmental conditions.

Agenda:

  • Introduction to fracture toughness
  • Fracture toughness testing of composite materials
  • Introduction to sandwich constructions
  • Testing of sandwich constructions
  • Integrated testing solutions

Composites Market Manager

Ian McEnteggart has a physics degree from Birmingham University and works for Instron in the UK as Composites Market Manager. Over a 41-year career, at Instron, he has been responsible for developing electronic controllers, software and transducers, including video extensometers and DIC systems, for material testing applications. He has published several articles on materials testing technology. In the field of composites, he is active in the development of international standards for materials testing and is chair of the BSI PRI/42 composites standards committee. He manages Instron’s range of testing fixtures, software and systems for composite testing and provides technical support for electromechanical testing system sales in Europe.
