Technical EU experts host one-day event on ceramic matrix composites

In-person event in Italy on June 25 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. brings together global academics to present on CMC technical research and development across Italy, France and Germany.

To make the most out of Cimtec Congress 2022, an event occurring June 20-29, 2022 in Perugia, Italy, as well as exchange news and best practices concerning the composites industry, a technical group of ceramic matrix composites (CMC) academic and industry experts are hosting what is said to be the first Italo-French in-person event after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The meeting, scheduled for June 25, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., will take place in the Corciano room at the Centro Congressi Hotel Quatrotorri, located in Perugia, Italy. The morning will begin with expert presentations about CMC research and technical development in Italy, France and Germany, by academics from the Torino Polytechnic (Politecnico di Torino, POLITO) and the Laboratory on Thermostructural Composites (Laboratoire des Composites Thermo Structuraux – LCTS), which is co-funded by the University of Bordeaux (France), the French National Centre For Scientific Research (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS), the French Atomic and Alternative Energies Center (CEA) and the Safran Group (Paris, France).

Among the scheduled topics from invited presenters, from Italian and French industries and universities, both innovative CMC processing routes and applications will be explored. Petroceramics (Italy) will introduce carbon-fiber reinforced CMC by (R)MI Route, while CEA Saclay (France) will discyss the development of SiC/SiC CMC for nuclear fuel cladding applications. ANDRA (France) will present the development of ox/ox and fiber/geopolymer CMC for underground nuclear waste storage management applications.

In addition, the EU-funded CEM-WAVE project, and its proposed application within the steelmaking industry, will be discussed in two presentations by its consortium members. The first one, by the LCTS Lab, will include a general overview of the new routes for CMC processing. The second one, more specific on the project cycle and first results, will be given by the project coordinator, University of Pisa (UNIPI, Italy). The LCTS Lab, POLITO and the UNIPI are all members of the CEM-WAVE consortium.

Organized by the Research Group on Ceramic Matrix Composite Materials (GDR CMC2) and the CNRS LCTS Lab, with the collaboration of the Italian Chapter of the American Ceramic Society (ACERS), the Glance Group and the Advanced Joining Technologies Group (J-Tech) within POLITO, the CMCs event is free of charge and open to all interested parties upon subscription.
