Thermolysis rCF pellets meet high-stress environment application needs

Test results indicate that Thermolysis’ short fiber rCF pellets are comparable to or surpass virgin carbon fiber pellets in tensile and flexural strength, making them suitable for injection molding and 3D printing.

Thermolysis Co. Ltd. (Taichung City, Taiwan), committed to advancing recycled carbon fiber (rCF) technology, highlights the high performance exhibited by its rCF pellet products through various testing.

For example, Thermolysis says its carbon fiber/PC pellets (20% carbon fiber) have surpassed competing products from SA Company and Te Company, showing a tensile strength of 134 MPa (vs. 120 MPa). Moreover, rCF pellet flexural strength reached 188 MPa (vs. 196 and 170 MPa, respectively) performance, and a flexural modulus of 12.4 GPa (vs. 9.8 GPa and 12 GPa, respectively).

Carbon fiber/PPA (30% carbon fiber) pellets achieved a tensile strength of 270 MPa, surpassing both Ti Company and Mi Company’s 247 and 249 MPa, respectively. The same goes for flexural strength (378 MPa, vs. 330 and 411) and flexural modulus (21.8 GPa, vs. 14.5 and 23.4 GPa), also outperforming competitors.

Notably, Thermolysis says its rCF products feature only ¼ the carbon footprint of virgin carbon fiber, offering a lower carbon emission composite material. Additionally, the company provides various thermoplastic resins (e.g., PP, PA, PPS, PC, ABS) to best meet required specifications (e.g., heat resistance, chemical resistance). The use of thermoplastic resins also simplifies processing (injection, profile extrusion, sheet/stamping processing and other methods), achieving high design freedom and complex processing.

Thermolysis pellets are made from short fibers, rather than continuous long fibers that need to be cut short. The company uses advanced surface modification and mixing technologies to combine carbon fibers with other resin materials, creating composite material pellets via efficient and environmentally friendly production. These materials are reported to feature optimal anti-static protection and electromagnetic shielding performance.

The pellets can be applied in various markets, from sports to industrial sectors, wherever light weight and high structural performance are needed. For instance, the company has already applied these short fiber pellets to its proprietary brand bicycle bottle holders as well as the midsole layers of shoes, both of which can be recycled in the future.

They can be widely used in various injection molded end products and 3D printing. Thermolysis also offers OEM services, where clients can provide the resin materials to be combined with rCF to produce high-quality pellets.
