Acciona Construction (Madrid, Spain) has announced its participation in LEE-BED (“Innovation Test Bed for development and production of nanomaterials for lightweight embedded electronics”), a European Union (EU)-funded research project aimed at eliminating barriers for penetration of nanomaterials into the embedded/printed electronics industry. The 48-month project, which began in January 2019 and runs until January 2023, plans to accelerate nanomaterials development while minimizing manufacturing risks.
To achieve its objective, LEE-BED will give access to Open Innovation Test Beds (OITB) to European enterprises. This access aims to establish industrial ecosystems, increase R&D investment, create new supply chains to support market entry and increase the EU’s competitive advantage globally.Acciona Construction’s Technology and Innovation division will be one of the four end-users responsible for conducting the trials and validating the developed technologies.
For Acciona, the main objective is integration of printable flexible electronic sensors into its FRP composites elements. This integration will play a key role in transition of conventional structural elements to smart products with functionalities such as wireless real-time monitoring, energy harvesting and geo-localization. This will further allow Acciona to extend the operational life, reduce maintenance and minimize total life-cycle costs of these products apart from enhancing the safety and comfort of the people by preventing possible accidents due to unexpected factors.
