Ru-bix (Norfolk, U.K.), a specialist manufacturer of thermoset tooling boards, has developed a new chemical formula, the RX-1200, for its 1200 density polyurethane tooling board. The new formula comes as a result of Ru-bix’s dedication to continuous improvement and delivering innovative solutions for a host of downstream engineering uses.
The new RX-1200 tooling board is said to be ideal for foundry models and hammer form tools. It offers high strength, high gloss finish capabilities and, according to Ru-bix, proves easy to machine with minimal swarf. The new formula is also available in a range of bespoke sizes, making it a versatile, cost-effective solution for a wide range of applications, including vacuum forming.
Tooling boards of 1000kg/m3 or more are classed as high density, Ru-Bix notes, and are typically used where manufacturing stresses are high or where exact dimensional tolerances, sharp-corner retention and excellent surface finish is required, the company says. The reformulated 1200kg/m3 was developed to exhibit a very fine surface structure, which ultimately influences the surface finish of the tooling board.
The RX-1200 formula also maintains the same high dimensional stability. This accounts for the toughness and rigidity of the material showing resistance to wear and tear over prolonged periods of time, which is ideal for extreme environmental conditions. Further, using ISO 178 and ISO 75 test methods, the company says the tooling and modeling board exhibited compressive strengths of up to 70 MPa, a maximum flexural strength of 80 MPa and can be used in environments where temperatures reach up to 85°C.
