CSub delivers one-piece composite truss bridge in Norway

EPC supplier has fabricated, transported and delivered a 42-meter composite bridge intended for pedestrians and bicyclists.

CSub (Arendel, Norway), an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) supplier of composite products and solutions, has successfully delivered what it says is the world’s longest composite truss-bridge to the Paradis city train station in Bergen, Norway. The footbridge, after fabrication, was transported to the site in one piece via ship, ferry and multi-wheeler before it was lifted into position within minutes.

The bridge is 42 meters long, a width of 7 meters and weighs approximately 47 tons. It is intended for pedestrians and bicyclists, who can now safely cross a densely trafficked road as well as the local city to airport train Bybanen. Notably, CSub says the bridge holds the new world record for being the largest of its kind, built entirely out of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP). To meet stringent requirements with respect to strength and stiffness versus weight, the bridge incorporates a combination of carbon and glass fibers. The bridge reasserts the advantages of using FRP, such as an optimal weight-to-strength ratio, long durability, minimized maintenance and a reduced carbon footprint compared to alternative materials.

CSub fabricated the bridge on behalf of Consto as the main contractor, with FiReCo on the engineering and Vestland Fylkeskommune (VLFK) as the end client. VLFK was supported by Multiconsult (general technical consultancy) and Royal HaskoningDHV (composite design and production quality control). The transportation and installation was carried out by Royal Transport.
