WEB EXCLUSIVE: India’s first injection-molded plastic fenders are featured on the new global XUV500 SUV from Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M). They are made of Noryl GTX, a PPE/nylon blend from SABIC Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass. The upgrade from steel to lightweight, online-paintable plastic fenders, which were developed by M&M with support from Tier 1 supplier Plastic Omnium, helped improve the SUV’s fuel economy and enhance resistance to minor impacts. Noryl GTX also gave M&M design freedom to create aggressively flared fenders with accentuated curves and bold lines in keeping with the XUV500’s cheetah-like design. The plastic fenders are said to make the XUV500 one of the lightest SUVs in its class. Noryl GTX, which can be up to 50% lighter than steel, reduced the fender weight by 1.98 lbs (0.9 kg)—a 27% weight savings.
