Syensqo (Brussels, Belgium) and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (Cowes, U.K.), a non-profit organization, have signed a strategic partner agreement for 3 years, focusing on advancing the circularity and sustainability agenda within the chemical sector. The partnership underscores Syensqo’s commitment to actively contribute to the transformation of value chains to circular business models.
As a continuation of the existing partnership with Solvay before the spin-off of Syensqo in December 2023, this renewed partnership will enable the Foundation network to continue relying on Syensqo’s input and expertise while also supporting its efforts to find new solutions to eliminate waste, make products and materials circular, and regenerate nature.
Beyond its own track to become carbon neutral by 2040, as a science company, Syensqo’s goal is to deliver clean and natural solutions to tackle the crucial challenges of our planet and society through innovation.
Syensqo’s work in the field of advancing circular economy with the Foundation focuses on three levers where chemistry can make a difference:
- Recirculating valuable materials (e.g, Syensqo’s technology enables the recovery of strategic metals from used electric vehicle batteries at a level of purity that enables their reuse in new batteries);
- Extending the longevity of materials (through constant product improvement through research and innovation);
- Integration of sustainable renewable feedstocks and the development of biodegradable products by design.
“Currently, over 80% of Syensqo’s innovation pipeline is dedicated to crafting sustainable solutions, and we aim to enhance the adoption of circular practices by committing to increase circular sales by 18% by 2030,” Ilham Kadri, CEO of Syensqo, says. “Chemistry is a potent catalyst for material transformation, and in our capacity as a worldwide manufacturer and provider of advanced materials and specialty chemicals, Syensqo plays a pivotal role in this system. It is only through chemistry that we can achieve the reuse of products while maintaining their quality and value. Our sustainability commitments are therefore centered around the three areas where we believe we can have the greatest positive impact: Climate and nature, sustainable growth and better life.”
