BYK expands additive production capacity with Shanghai facility

Following project phase II’s (SCIP II) completion in March 2022, BYK (Wesel, Germany and Shanghai, China), a global manufacturer of specialty chemicals, has significantly expanded its production capacity in China. A newly announced Shanghai-integrated site, covering an area of 1.16 hectares (~124,000 square feet), is the company’s second production facility in China following BYK Tongling. BYK’s surface additive Byketol-Ok, which is applicable for automotive and industrial coatings, started rolling off the production line in July 2022; the facility is designed for an annual capacity of 4,750 tons.

Coinciding with production capacity expansion, BYK says it is able to offer its customers a diverse and complete product range including defoamers, surface additives and more. These additives are widely applicable for automotive, industrial, furniture and architectural coatings, printing inks, adhesives, thermoplastics, thermosets and more. They comprise various systems such as solvent-borne, solvent-free, low polarity, high polarity, etc.

strategy,” Dr. Tammo Boinowitz, division president of BYK, says. “Many global value chains have a broad base in China. And China is the decisive growth market for us in the medium and long term.”

The BYK Additives Shanghai production expansion is said to be only the beginning of BYK’s development strategy in China. In the near future, the scale, energy level and importance of the Shanghai site will also be further enhanced. As a frontier for intelligent production exploration, green factory and technological innovation, BYK expects the Shanghai-integrated site to establish an intelligent manufacturing process with 85% automatic feeding, focus on the production of silicone additives with innovative technologies, and to achieve an annual capacity of more than 20,000 tons to provide more value for our customers.
