Cygnet Texkimp, Bowman Power advance high-tension carbon fiber overwrapping
Together, partners are progressing high-tension e-rotor overwrapping for mass land transport, optimizing accuracy and repeatability at rate.
Cygnet Texkimp (Cheshire, U.K.) and Bowman Power (Southampton, U.K.) are collaborating to advance capability in high-tension carbon fiber overwrapping of rotors used in electric power trains for land transport applications. The companies are presenting an overview of the solution — including the challenges of winding carbon fiber at high tension, at rate, and with high levels of accuracy and repeatability — at Carbon Fiber this Thursday from 2:30 – 3:00 p.m.
The collaboration combines Cygnet Texkimp’s filament winding expertise and high-tension overwrapping solution with Bowman Power’s capabilities in developing electrified turbomachinery for industries including rail, on and off-highway and power generation.
The original solution was developed by Cygnet Texkimp to wind carbon fiber at high tension around the motor, adding an extra level of strength and increasing its capacity for rotational speed and endurance without adding significant weight, which can result in more power from lighter motors.
“This project is driven by the transportation market looking for ways to improve the performance of electrification technologies — in particular, the search for a solution that increases the accuracy, efficiency and consistency of e-motors at high speeds,” says Gareth Davies, international sales manager at Cygnet Texkimp. “Collaborating with Bowman Power’s program and production teams has helped us to refine the offering supplied and provides an optimal base for future development. The technology offers a robust and reliable answer to a major industry challenge, and we believe it has the potential to become an industry-wide solution to electrification, with many applications across the transportation market.”
Bowman Power has acquired the winding technology and is working with Cygnet Texkimp to develop a dedicated solution to support customers across the transportation market.
“I’m thrilled with the new capability Cygnet Texkimp has enabled Bowman Power to bring online, helping us to deliver the electrified turbomachinery solutions we are developing,” says Paul Dowman-Tucker, CEO at Bowman Power.
