Personal recreation vehicle company D-Fly (London, U.K.) recently unveiled its Dragonfly electric hyperscooter, which features a lightweight carbon fiber composite deck among its innovations.
The four-wheel electric Dragonfly scooter is designed with patented full-tilt steering that controls all wheels at once, four-wheel dual-independent damped suspension and a high-class, sleek design to deliver stability and control even while navigating difficult terrain.
The Dragonfly features two 550-watt motors for peak power of up to 1,650 watts to all four wheels, enabling speeds of up to 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour). The total scooter weighs 16.8 kilograms (37 pounds).
Key to the scooter’s stability and safety is the wide carbon fiber deck. Carbon fiber was chosen for its high strength-to-weight ratio, and because it promotes a natural flex while maintaining optimum rigidity.

Manufactured by a fabrication partner that specializes in carbon fiber composite race car components, the Dragonfly’s deck is built by layering sheets of 3K carbon fiber, composite channels and foam core into a twin cavity tool. Resin is introduced and the deck is consolidated via heat and pressure. Specially designed composite channels within the deck permit electric cables to flow through it to connect rear lights and sensors. After molding, the structure is then trimmed, polished and its outer coat applied. Finally, grip tape is applied to the top of the deck, before the finished deck is assembled with its complementary parts.
Along with the deck, the scooter’s front fender and mudguard options come in carbon fiber as well.
“The urban mobility industry is burgeoning, and we realized a need for a more advanced, high-quality product that would usher in a new era of e-mobility. With Dragonfly, we are confident that we have created something truly special that will change the way people move around cities and not only today but forever,” Jez Williman, CEO of D-Fly Group, says.
The Dragonfly has been introduced to the market in two versions: the urban DF and the offroad DFX. The DF is designed for smooth riding in urban areas or parks; the DFX comes with wider fenders and handguards for use on challenging terrain.
Currently, both DF and DFX variations are available for purchase online via Indiegogo.
