Since 2021 — when composites manufacturer Permali Gloucester (Gloucester, U.K.) was acquired — Diamorph Group (Greater Manchester, U.K.) has been actively working on revitalizing the Permali plant located on Bristol Road in Birmingham, modernizing operations and the site itself to improve the environment.

Diamorph Group has invested £1.5 million in a state-of-the-art fume treatment plant known as a regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO), which will aid in mitigating odors from the composites manufacturing process.

In particular the RTO will treat many of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated during the manufacturing of the base materials used for composite components. By heating the VOCs to 800°C, the RTO converts them into harmless water and carbon dioxide. The resulting hot air, water and CO2 will then be safely exhausted through a 15-meter-high chimney. The emissions from this chimney will be subject to regulatory checks to ensure the equipment is working correctly.

The equipment order, placed in August 2022, began the delivery process this June. Construction, installation, commissioning and testing phases will be completed by July. Throughout the remainder of 2023, Diamorph says it will gradually transition its processes to this new plant. While the impact may not be instantaneous, the group is confident that it will significantly improve the atmosphere surrounding the factory, benefiting its employees and neighbors.
