Western Sydney University (Sydney,  Australia) has won the single occupant vehicle (SOV) class of the American Solar Challenge (ASC), becoming the first international and first Australian solar car team to win the competition.

Western Sydney won four out of five stages of the 2,800 km challenge – a global race which sees international university competitors travel across four US states from Nebraska to Oregon.

The team clocked up 1,700 miles in their car, Unlimited 2.0, which features a Monocoque Carbon Fiber chassis, carbon fiber wheels, a 960W Silicon solar array and 5kWh Lithium Ion  batteries. It lost one stage of the race to defending ASC champion University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI, US), who took second place in the SOV class.

First place in the multi occupant vehicle (MOV) class, a new category in the challenge, went to the University of Bologna (Bologna, Italy).
