Composites Polycon 2007 Preview

Billed by organizers as the “most comprehensive composites conference in the world,” and co-organized by the American Composites Manufacturers Assn. (ACMA) and the International Cast Polymer Alliance (ICPA), the COMPOSITES & POLYCON Show opens its annual three-day trade event Oct. 17 at the Tampa Bay Convention Center in Tampa, Fla. Under the theme “Making Waves in the World,” show organizers expect to gather 260 exhibitors into the exhibit hall and complement show floor activities with more than 100 educational offerings in nearby meeting areas.

New this year to the program is “Going Green with Composites: A Sustainable Future,” sponsored by PPG Industries (Pittsburgh, Pa.). ACMA’s “green” track will include three sessions on Oct. 18 dealing with product design in ways that take into account its impact on the environment. Meanwhile, “Composites 101: How-To School for Composites Production” will offer those new to the industry a “basics” education. On the Riverwalk outside the convention hall, attendees can see Product Showcase Demonstrations, a series of live production sessions in closed molding and cast polymer applications. In the spotlight will be distributor Composites One’s (Arlington Hts., Ill.) traveling closed molding program (see also the “IBEX 2007 Preview,” under “Related Content,” at left).

For those who design and fabricate cast polymer and other composites for the residential construction and remodeling markets, the show’s annual “U.S. Housing Forecast” keynote presentation will be offered again this year by consultant Dr. Stan Duobinis (Crystal Ball Economics Inc., Millersville, Md.), formerly the director of forecasting for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Duobinis will offer predictions about the market for the coming year — an event that promises to be of special import this year in light of the current slump in the mortgage industry.

In addition to its educational menu, ACMA is highlighting networking opportunities. ACMA’s CEO/Senior Management Forum will gather chief executives and upper management from composites manufacturers to hear advice from Dick Lyles (Leadership Legacies LLC, Poway, Calif.) about top-down strategies for workforce motivation and better business operation. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, composites “top brass” also will meet, by invitation only, in ACMA’s Leadership Reception (6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.). In all, more than 30 business meetings will be held at the show by a variety of groups gathered to discuss issues and opportunities facing composites professionals. And all attendees will be welcome at the show’s Opening Reception on Wednesday evening (6:00 to 7:30 p.m.). Visitors and exhibitors from outside the U.S. will be feted Thursday, Oct. 18 (6:30 p.m.) at the show’s International Reception, held at the nearby Tampa Marriott Waterside hotel.

Since co-location of the ACMA’s and ICPA’s once separate events two years ago, the combined trade event has offered two awards competitions. ACMA’s ACE Awards program will honor those judged as top entries in five categories: Infinite Possibility, Most Creative Application, Process Innovation, Superior Quality in an Opened Molded Part and, finally, an award for the entry considered the best Technical Innovation for a Corrosion Application. Meanwhile, ICPA will present its Pinnacle Awards, recognizing achievers in the cast polymer market. Winners will be selected in four categories: Most Sustainable Market Growth & Attractiveness, Best Installation, Most Creative Application and a Best of Show – People’s Choice award, selected by show attendees.

A regular feature of the show, ACMA’s Certified Composites Technician (CCT) Examinations, will be administered during the event.
