Greenalia initiates four floating wind farm projects for Spain
The four independent wind farms are expected to meet the Canary Islands’ goals to develop 310 MW of offshore wind as set out in its 2015-2025 Strategic Energy Plan.

Greenalia (Galacia, Spain), an Independent Power Producer (IPP) that deals exclusively with renewable technologies has submitted its project and environmental planning applications to initiate the development of four new floating offshore wind projects, Dunas, Mojo, Cardon and Guanche, in Gran Canaria. This project is in addition to the company’s 50-megawatt (MW) Gofio wind farm, which launched its permitting process earlier this year.
Each independent wind farm project — all located on the southeast coast of the Gran Canaria, and in the vicinity of the Gofio farm — will consist of four 12.5 MW offshore wind turbines on top of floating foundations, anchored to the seabed at depths of between 61 and 92 meters. As in the case of Gofio wind farm, says Greenalia, these new facilities will be connected to the grid through submarine cables which will conduct the energy produced by each of the wind farms individually.
In this way, the company says it is endorsing its commitment to floating wind energy, as one of the renewable energy sources that will lead the green growth in Europe in coming years. The four projects, along with Gofio, also increase Greenalia’s offshore wind portfolio to 250 MW in the Canary Islands, and are expected to significantly reduce energy costs (LCOE), and increase employment.
The deployment of these wind farms is also expected to enable the Canary Islands to achieve the goal of developing 310 MW of offshore wind as set out in its 2015-2025 Strategic Energy Plan (EECan25).
