SAMPE 2007 Preview

For the first time, SAMPE’s U.S. Symposium heads east, to Baltimore.

Share

M&P — Coast to Coast and Around the World. That’s the theme as the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering’s annual U.S. trade show moves across the country this year from its usual Long Beach digs to the East Coast for a five-day run at the Baltimore Convention Center, in Baltimore, Md.

The cross-country hop isn’t the only out-of-the-ordinary aspect of this year’s event. The 52nd SAMPE Symposium and Exhibition will take place June 3-7, rather than in its traditional May time frame and, according to show organizers, the 2007 conference and exhibits will feature several other innovations, both on and off the show floor.

Conference within a conference

New this year is a special Nanotechnology Conference. By popular demand, SAMPE has incorporated a nanotechnical curriculum that for the past two years has been offered exclusively at its Fall Technical Conference.

Enhanced specifically for the Baltimore meeting, SAMPE’s “nanoprogram” offers updates on rapidly developing research and applications in the field. Opening the conference-within-a-conference, Dr. Jiang Zhu (NanoRidge Materials Inc., Houston, Texas) will lead a tutorial on “Nanocomposites Technology” on Sunday, June 3. Throughout the rest of the SAMPE event, Nanomaterials session presenters will offer papers on a variety of subjects, detailing the latest findings and applications in key areas of nanoresearch. For dates and times, see Sessions in “SAMPE at a Glance,”).

The nanotechnical sessions will form one of a number of technical education threads woven into the fabric of this year’s conference. Sponsored by SAMPE’s Baltimore/Washington Chapter, the Symposium will field more than 50 educational sessions, each with multiple speakers/papers, as well as half-day Tutorials — a dozen training/instructional programs offered by seasoned industry professionals. Six sets of panelists will offer oral presentations on a wide range of timely topics. (For dates and times, see Panel notations in “SAMPE at a Glance”) Additionally, the former MIL-17 seminar, now the Composite Material Handbook 17 seminar (CMH-17), returns to the Symposium program this year on Wednesday afternoon. Presenters will highlight newer content, including expansions to segments on metal-matrix and ceramic-matrix composites as well as a new volume devoted to sandwich structures. The session also will include a discussion of Handbook subsections where changes are currently under consideration. This session involves a separate fee of $200 (USD). For additional information, visit www.cmh17.org/sampe.htm.

NASA will have a large exhibit on the show floor and, for the first time since 2004, attendees will be able to attend NASA Technology Briefings on Wednesday, June 6 (time to be determined). During this session, representatives from the agency’s facilities throughout the U.S. will provide in-depth technical presentations, featuring their most recent advances, and discuss technology transfer possibilities.

This year’s annual Fellows Banquet marks the 25th anniversary of the SAMPE Fellows program. The program begins with cocktails at 6:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The evening will honor the following 2007 Fellows: Ori Ishai, Isao Kimpra, Joseph H. Koo, Adrie Kwakernaak, Charles Lee, Jayant D. Patel and, posthumously, SAMPE past president Anthony Falcone.

On the exhibition floor, more than 230 exhibitors will show the latest in composite materials, processing technologies and related products, and contestants will try their skills in SAMPE’s two composites engineering competitions. Open only to engineering students, the 10th Annual Bridge Building Contest will be judged in four categories: Carbon (kit and non-kit), Glass (kit only) and Natural Fiber (kit only). While the most weight-efficient bridges will be declared the winners, each entrant also has been asked to predict his/her bridge’s failure load, prior to testing. Those whose bridges perform closest to their predictions will receive additional prizes. Meanwhile, those competing in the 3rd Annual Wing Contest, will use kit materials to construct a similarly sized wing that can weigh no more than 0.75 lb/0.33 kg. Open to students and professionals, the contest rules stipulate that wings can deflect no more than 2 inches/50.8 mm under a centrally applied load. Wings with the highest load/weight ratio before failure, within the deflection limit, will be judged the winners.

Pultrusion connection

One of the more significant innovations this year is the co-scheduling of the Global Pultrusion Technology Conference, which will be held on Thursday and Friday, June 7-8, at the nearby Tremont Grand and Tremont Plaza Suites Hotel. The two-day conference was previously held only in Europe and this year comes to the U.S. for the first time.

According to event organizers, 300 pultruders worldwide account for 500,000 metric tonnes (about 1.1 billion lb) of the composites manufactured each year.

Given current concern in the U.S. and Europe for energy efficient design, the conference will address the topic under the theme “Composite Profiles — Save Energy.” One of the six conference sessions will be devoted entirely to “Energy Saving in Mobility, Transport, Construction and Energy Systems.”
