Teijin Ltd. (Tokyo, Japan) has announced the incorporation of its innovative materials, Tenax TPCL and Panlite Sheet, into the housing of the lightweight portable displays developed by VAIO Corporation. The new products, VAIO Vision+ 14 and VAIO Vision+ 14P, collectively known as VAIO Vision+, were launched in Japan in early July and are reported to feature the world's lightest weight portable display.

Weighing approximately 325 grams and measuring just 3.9 millimeters at its thinnest point, the housing of the VAIO Vision+ displays utilizes Tenax TPCL for the top and bottom layers, a sheet-like material composed of woven carbon fiber impregnated with thermoplastic resin. This material is not only lightweight but also offers excellent heat and impact resistance, strength, rigidity and meets the stringent flame retardancy requirements for electrical products.

The middle layer of the housing is made from Panlite Sheet, a polycarbonate resin known for its excellent dimensional stability, light weight and impact resistance.

This combination of materials has facilitated a revolutionary design that eliminates the need for traditional metal parts used in conventional housings, thereby simplifying the manufacturing process and reducing CO2 emissions. The approach allows for the creation of complex, three-dimensional shapes in a single molding step, significantly reducing the number of manufacturing steps and contributing to environmental sustainability.
