Roth Composite Machinery (Steffenberg, Germany) has been hard at work developing an automation concept for reliable fiber changing as well as its special winding software µRoWin.

The splicing unit emerged from the company’s development work and is said to prove very powerful in the trial phase. It is an automation concept in which compressed air is used to swirl the individual fibers for all fiber strands in parallel to create a secure connection with the changeable fibers. Previously, rovings have either been knotted or spliced by hand when changing — a process that is not only time-consuming, but also prone to errors. The automated process, together with the corresponding machine, can realize the fiber changing process quickly and safely.

The winding software µRoWin for generating programs for the machine movement was specially developed for Roth Composite Machinery’s high-level filament winding machines. It offers a fluent workflow and enables the checking of all relevant input parameters at any time. The transparency and precision of the algorithms anchored in the software promote the highest placement accuracy of the fibers, making it an instrument for quality assurance.

The powerful, user-friendly special software not only improves the winding process, but also promotes maximum efficiency beforehand. The structure can be designed and improved via 3D simulation. The “digital twin” can then be transferred to the machine as a control code by pressing a button.

“We are very much looking forward to showing our innovations in Atlanta and talking to our customers and interested parties,” says managing director Dr. Andreas Reimann, “especially the contacts during a trade fair provide important impulses for future developments, which we — as renowned filament winding experts — actively help to shape.”
